Monday’s fire was just two miles north of the deadly 2023 disaster but officials said it has so far been far better contained

Firefighters in Maui are battling a brush fire burning above Kaanapali, Hawaii, on Monday. Both lanes of Honoapiʻilani Highway between Puʻukoliʻi Road and Lower Honoapiʻilani Highway have been shut down amid firefighting efforts. Officials asked motorists to avoid the area. The blaze comes almost two years after the devastating Lahaina wildfires.

At around 11:40 a.m., a brush fire in Ka’anapali was reported, and by 1:20 p.m., the Maui Emergency Management Agency issued an evacuation order throughout Ka’anapali.
