California voters gave Democrats — and possibly Gov. Gavin Newsom — a major win Tuesday by passing a plan that could help give them five House seats in 2026.

Most California voters didn't like redrawing their congressional districts to favor Democrats, according to the AP Voter Poll.

Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom scored a victory against President Donald Trump, with California voters approving a ballot measure allowing his state to change congressional maps ahead of next year’s midterm elections.

The measure came in response to an effort in Texas for a mid-decade congressional redistricting that analysts said would give Republicans five additional seats. Other Republican-controlled states such as Florida, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, New Hampshire, Nebraska and South Carolina are also considering efforts to approve mid-decade redistricting.

Sliwa offered good luck to Zohran Mamdani, who is projected to win the mayoral election. Though he warned that if Mamdani tries to "implement socialism" or weaken police, Sliwa and his coalition will become the Mamdani administration's "worst nightmare."

It's the final push for California's Proposition 50, a ballot measure backed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and other legislative Democrats that aims to redraw the state's congressional districts. On Monday, Gov. Newsom spoke at a rally in San Francisco on the eve of Election Day, rallying supporters.
