Federal authorities announced charges against Vance Boelter on Monday, revealing more details on Boelter's actions when he shot and injured Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, and fatally shot Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband.

Vance Luther Boelter, 57, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly killing a Minnesota Democratic state lawmaker and her husband while posing as a police officer, Governor Tim Walz said.

Vance Boelter, the man accused of shooting two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses, is set to make his first court appearance Monday afternoon on charges of murder and attempted murder.

Vance Boelter, who faces several charges in the deadly shooting of a Minnesota Democrat lawmaker and her husband, targeted four different lawmakers during his rampage, acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson said during a press conference Monday. Thompson said Boelter's alleged crimes "are the stuff of nightmares," calling them "truly chilling."

On Saturday, Walz said Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were “out of surgery,” and their nephew Mat Ollig told the Star Tribune on Sunday they were “both awake now and recovering,” noting a bullet that struck Hoffman “barely missed his heart.”

Jail records indicate a federal charge against Boelter, which could keep him in custody, even if he could post bail.

Vance and Jenny Boelter own a home in Green Isle, Minn., in Sibley County, which is about an hour’s drive southwest of the Twin Cities. Onamia, where Jenny Boelter was pulled over, is about 125 miles north of the couple’s home.
