Some SNAP benefits reported stolen across NYS
Some SNAP recipients in New York have had their benefits stolen due to EBT skimming, with funds being used at stores they have never been to, and the federal government will not replace the stolen funds.
The state is making efforts to reduce the backlog, but as of November, 3,854 SNAP applicants were still waiting longer than allowed by law — roughly the same figure as the state reported in July.
The $12 billion in potential annual losses represents taxpayer money diverted from feeding vulnerable Americans to funding criminal enterprises. Georgia reported a particular escalation: the state reported just $4.4 million stolen in all of 2024, but nearly $23 million disappeared in the first quarter of 2025 alone (3).
