Melissa strengthened into a major hurricane and is expected to bring "catastrophic" flash flooding and landslides to Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Hurricane Melissa has strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane after strengthening from a tropical storm to a major hurricane in the span of about nine hours, the National Hurricane Center says.
Direct landfalls from big hurricanes are rare for Jamaica. Melissa could pummel the island as an “upper-end” Category 4 hurricane, forecasters said.
Melissa is forecast to become a hurricane by Saturday, Oct. 25, and a major hurricane by Sunday, Oct. 26, the Hurricane Center said. Current forecasts predict Melissa will be a Category 4 storm early next week. A major hurricane is one that is a Category 3 or higher, with maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph.
