As a response to this, the Internet Mail Consortium created the vCard format. A vCard is denoted by a VCF extension, which is a computer-readable file that contains a person's contact information.

The recommended file format is the VCF format version 4.0 and above. The VCF format is now supported by most variant-calling software tools, such as GATK 10, SAMtools 49 and many others.
