The Marlins are hoping for the 2022 version of Alcantara when he won the National League Cy Young award after finishing with a 14-9 record, 2.28 ERA and 207 strikeouts in a league-leading 228 2/3 innings. He struggled somewhat in 2023, finishing 7-12 with a 4.14 ERA.
This will be Alcantara’s fifth time as Miami’s Opening Day starter after holding that role each year from 2020 to 2023 before missing the 2024 season.
El Caballo” is back. Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara took the mound for the first time in 521 days, maxing out at 99.3 mph on the radar gun and tossing a scoreless inning in Sunday afternoon’s 1-1 Grapefruit League tie with the Mets at Clover Park.
The Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves were recently listed among the potential suitors in a trade for Sandy Alcantara.
Alcantara missed all of the 2024 season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but had a regular offseason and is full go in spring. He’s the Marlins’ longest-tenured player, having been with the team since 2018, and for now is the face of the franchise. But for how long? That remains to be seen.
