NEW YORK (AP) — “Saturday Night Live” was built with a cast of young no-names performing countercultural comedy. The show has become an incubator of talent — think Will Ferrell, Chris Rock, Amy Poehler, Billy Crystal, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Phil Hartman, Pete Davidson and Tracy Morgan.

When Lamar screamed “Mustaaarrrd”, during the final song, “TV Off”, the man himself galloped onto the stage holding a football. Ending with a tribute to the producer of “Not Like Us”, without whom the song wouldn’t have been anywhere near as powerful, rounded off the night on a classy note after 13 minutes of otherwise unadulterated pettiness.

Throughout the roughly 13-minute performance, Lamar teased “Not Like Us,” his biggest hit to date and the song that has made Universal Music Group (Lamar’s label) the subject of a libel lawsuit. The diss track targets Drake and, according to the musician’s lawyers, falsely accuses him of criminal activity.
