The sheriff's office said the discovery was made just after 2:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of Gainey Road in Fayetteville.

The potholes that regularly form after snowfall events are likely caused by the freeze-thaw effect, Fayetteville assistant public works director Terry Gulley said.
