NEW YORK — The toll of wildfires is usually counted in acres burnt, property destroyed and lives lost to smoke and flames.

An 18-year-old man died while hiking in the Hana Highway in Maui. Rescuers had to reach him by helicopter due to the location and height of the 120-foot waterfall.
