A 3.8 magnitude earthquake was centered off the Maine coast and felt for hundreds of miles around New England. WBZ-TV meteorologists Jacob Wycoff and Terry Eliasen break down what may have caused it.

Much of New England saw the first “warm” day on Sunday after a brief cold snap and nearly a week of below average temperatures. The work week ahead will start with temperatures staying at or slightly above average with two weak storm systems passing through New England starting Tuesday, bringing some light snow showers.

An earthquake centered off the coast of Maine rattled the region, causing light to moderate shaking in the state, as well as in parts of Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut.

Kevin Skarupa says East Coast earthquakes are typically felt across a larger area than West Coast ones, despite the fact that quakes in the western U.S. are typically stronger and more frequent.

The largest known New England earthquakes were a 6.5-magnitude in 1638 centered in Vermont or New Hampshire, and a 5.8-magnitude centered offshore from Cape Ann in 1755, which resulted in severe damage to the Boston waterfront.

A 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck New England, causing shaking from Boston to Maine. No injuries reported, but residents were advised to avoid unnecessary 911 calls.

Boston residents can expect light snow, a mix of precipitation, and noticeable temperature swings, all accompanied by a gusty breeze.
