Avian influenza H5N1, commonly known as bird flu or Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), is a novel influenza A virus that primarily affects birds. It has also caused outbreaks in poultry and, more recently, U.S. dairy cows, with recent human cases primarily occurring in farm workers exposed to infected animals.

Avian influenza has been detected in Arizona, including a commercial poultry farm in Pinal County and a backyard flock in Maricopa County. Most human infections with H5 virus have occurred after unprotected exposure to sick or dead infected animals or their environment.
