Joshua Harold Stein (born September 13, 1966) [1] is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the 76th governor of North Carolina since 2025. A member of the Democratic Party, Stein served from 2017 to 2025 as the 51st attorney general of North Carolina and from 2009 to 2016 in the North Carolina Senate.

Governor Josh Stein was called to public service by his faith and his family. His faith teaches him that we are all called to make a difference, and his parents Adam and Jane raised his brother Eric, sister Gerda, and him to try to do what is right. They grounded him in our shared values of freedom and opportunity for everyone.

We are a great state. I’m running for Governor to help us build a better and brighter future. As Attorney General, I have fought for the people of North Carolina for safer communities, stronger schools, healthier families, and personal freedom. And that’s what I’ll do as Governor.
