Meet Amara, the sassiest animal at the Zoo 🦛 Pygmy hippos like Amara are now incredibly rare, with only around 2500 remaining in the wild. Through ZSL we obtained the first ever photos of pygmy hippos in Liberia, helping pioneer wildlife conservation for hippos in the country. The voice of Amara our pygmy hippo 🎙️ Pygmy hippos are incredibly rare and elusive in the wild, which means hearing their purr vocalisation is a special privilege. There is currently very little research into pygmy hippo vocalisations, but by working closely with Amara at the Zoo we’re able to advance understanding of these behaviours while supporting conservation work in their native Liberia.
