Here's another cracking vintage video, this time of Barnstaple Carnival in 1950. There's a chance one or two of you may recognise someone here, let us know if that's the case .. I hope you like it! :-) JP. | Barnstaple History

Short clip from the BFI taken during the opening of Barnstaple Fair. Quite odd, as I've been looking at some of these faces this last couple of weeks while scanning images for Barnstaple Town Council .. and here they are, moving about and stuff. 101 years ago, quite marvellous. | Barnstaple History

Barnstaple - Then & Now. The first compilation of 10 "Before & After" composites, featuring various scenes in & around Barnstaple, north Devon. Another 9 compilations to upload when I get time... You won't need to be a railway buff to love this video I've had sent in. I've posted posted part of it before, but here's a much longer version of a train travelling into Barnstaple Junction & then all the way to Ilfracombe. Lots of landmarks, stations & interesting views. Complete crying shame that we were soon to be deprived of this line. I hope you like it, and I hope you share it! :-) JP. | Barnstaple History

Some fabulous footage of the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway that I don't think I've uploaded before. I'm sure someone will correct me, but this looks like it could be one of the last, if not the last journey on this line. The train is shown here doing some trainy-things in Pilton Yard (I think?) before carrying on to Barnstaple Town Station - some nice footage of passing along Rolle Quay / Gould's Yard. The rest of the film is the outward journey to Lynton, but finishes with some footage of the auc

One of my Then & Now composite things from a couple of years ago, using a postcard featuring a photograph of The Strand, always thought this one worked quite well I'm curious if you guys would like to see any more of these Then & Now things, or if the novelty has worn off and they're now rather tedious & dull? I've noticed a few other history pages trying to have a go at making things like this since I started doing it, wondering if anyone still finds them interesting? Or maybe you prefer the "s

This part of Barnstaple saw massive changes in the early to mid 80s. One of the few examples - in my opinion - where the new is clearly an improvement on the old. Gammon Lane, Barnstaple, Then & Now. | Barnstaple History

Another Then & Now composition of Boutport Street to go with this morning's upload. Someone with a keen eye might be able to work out the exact year, but I reckon 1982 is a fair guess. Also I'm gonna guess that this image was taken on a Sunday - as I'm sure a lot of you will remember just how busy this road used to be when it was part of the one way system around town! :-) JP. | Barnstaple History

Top of Bear Street, Alexandra Road. These houses were compulsory purchased in the early 80s & demolished in order to build the "inner relief road". Weirdest bit of town/road planning we've had for a long time ... | Barnstaple History

Not a history post.. but certainly a Barnstaple'ish post. Was going through some files and found this video from last year, playing with a new camera to see what the zoom was like. Can pretty much see the time on the Albert Clock from the top of Codden Hill, over 2.5 miles away - thought some of you might find it interesting :-) | Barnstaple History

Short little clip of Barnstaple Fair in 1976. Appears to be the Wednesday afternoon, taken during the opening when they use the dignitaries to test the rides out ;-) Nice clear bit of footage, should be some familiar recognisable faces in there - tell us if you spot anyone you know! A great bit of vintage footage of the men & women at work at Shapland & Petter. Includes a bit of film of what appears to be their participation that year in Barnstaple Carnival. Finishing with the whistle being blown & the workers leaving the factory - it's an interesting bit of footage & I hope you enjoy it! :-) JP. | Barnstaple History

A rather splendid old image of a bunch of day-trippers piled into a charabanc outside of Barnstaple's old Bus Station, now Tea on the Taw. I would think the bus station must have been reasonably new when the photo was taken... Anyone with a keen eye able to identify the flag in the old image? I do like these "Then & Now" compositions when the old photo has people in them like this - and I hope you do too! :-) JP. | Barnstaple History

Walking down the High Street this afternoon I remembered I had a photograph from 1950ish of the Northgate end of the road on my Before & After To-Do List. I didn't have my camera with me, so tried to use my iPad to recreate the old photo. I've just run it through my Before & After Maker-Upper (technical term), and this is the result. Hope you like it! :-) JP. | Barnstaple History
