⚽ TRY THIS at your next session to encourage quick decision making! When the ball goes out, the game can be restarted with either a pass in or a dribble in. The player taking the restart simply places one hand on the ball to signal a pass, or two hands to signal a dribble, then play continues immediately. To encourage even quicker decision making, add a time limit for restarts. If the ball isn’t back in play in time, possession goes to the other team. It’s a great way to speed up decision making

⚽ HOW TO COACH children in the Foundation Phase! Get down to their level! Physically getting down to a child’s level makes a big difference. Kneeling or crouching shows you care, helps them feel safe, and makes the interaction feel supportive rather than authoritative. Children are far more likely to listen and engage when you meet them where they are. Ask thought-provoking questions, but don’t give the answer! Instead of telling children what to do, ask questions that make them think. Avoid clo

🎉 STOP SAYING “spread out!” and instead, try this! Ask the children to pretend a confetti cannon has just gone off. The confetti shoots in every direction and the children scatter the same way, helping them find space and open passing options. When you’re coaching children, make sure you’re: - Turning ideas into something they can picture - Using stories and games to make learning stick - Remembering they aren’t mini adults and adjusting your language | Coach Jonny

⚽️ START YOUR MATCHES in training by saying, “Whoever is in the most space will start!” It’s such a simple cue, but it works brilliantly. The moment the children hear it, they begin scanning, spreading out and finding good positions in space. It builds great habits! Save this for later and follow Coach Jonny for daily coaching tips. | Coach Jonny

🍕 ONE OF THE MOST COMMON things I hear in grassroots football is “find space!” or “spread out”! But children aren’t mini adults, and they require a different approach to coaching. You need to: - Use age-appropriate language that makes sense to them. - Bring concepts to life through storytelling. - Create visuals and games that make learning fun and memorable. Great coaching includes understanding how children learn, meeting them at their level, and communicating in a way that truly connects. |

⚽️ SIMPLE, but effective. Try this game to help encourage children to attack quickly. When the ball goes out, the defending team must all hold a five second balance! Including the goalkeeper! The attacking team has to run and collect the ball, and try to restart play as quickly as possible. They’ve then got an opportunity whilst their opponents are balancing, to attack and score! This game is great for encouraging children to attack and play quickly, and a lot of fun! | Coach Jonny

⚽️ TRY THIS at your next session! We often talk about formats like 11v11 or 7v7… but the second the whistle goes, the picture starts changing. Players step out to press, others get caught out of position, and suddenly there’s a 3v2 in midfield or a 2v1 on the edge of the box. Football isn’t played in perfect numbers. It’s a constant flow of overloads and underloads across the pitch. So design your practices to mirror that. When players are outnumbered, help them understand how to protect the bal

💸 GRASSROOTS COACHES, get paid nothing! Grassroots coaches across the country pour countless hours of hard work, dedication, and passion into their roles, yet they are often rewarded with little to no pay. These coaches are the backbone of youth football, but too often, their efforts go unnoticed and undervalued. The time and energy grassroots coaches invest in their teams, training sessions, and matchdays is priceless. Let’s give them the appreciation they truly deserve! | Coach Jo

🌟 SPREADING HAPPINESS! At our sessions, we’re always looking for little ways to spread positivity and create an environment where every child feels good about themselves. One of the most powerful tools we use is encouraging the children to praise their teammates. It might be as simple as saying “well done” after a good pass, celebrating someone’s effort, or recognising when a teammate has tried something new. It sounds small, but it creates such a big shift in the atmosphere. You see more smile

📣 WHY shouting from the sideline isn’t helping your child! We’ve all heard it..! Or maybe even done it ourselves. “Pass!” “Shoot!” “Cross!” Parents and coaches shouting instructions, desperate to help. It comes from a good place, but does it actually help? In reality, if kids are hearing different voices and mixed messages from parents, coaches, and teammates, it just confuses them. It can also stunt their development. If they’re always told what to do, how will they ever l

⬆️ A SIMPLE, but effective way to teach children to be more accurate with their passing is to use their standing foot as a pointer! As they go to pass the ball, encourage them to point their standing foot and toe toward the target. This helps to align their body and naturally guides their follow-through, ensuring the pass stays on target. It’s a great way to develop consistency in passing and gives them a simple, clear focus for accuracy! Follow @coachjonnyfff for more daily top tips and

💙 A QUICK LESSON in championing your teammates! In a recent session, I spoke with the children about the importance of celebrating and encouraging their teammates when they get things right, rather than pointing out when they make mistakes. I asked them to focus on what went well, and guess what? The energy on the pitch completely changed. The children worked harder for each other, and their smiles said it all. This simple exercise made an instant impact and not just on their teamwork but on th

🚨 THE BIGGEST MISTAKE IN GRASSROOTS FOOTBALL!? Are you over-coaching the children you coach? It’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly giving instructions, but sometimes less is more. Over-coaching can take away the children’s freedom to think for themselves and learn through experience. When we give too many directions, we stifle creativity, problem-solving, and decision-making on the pitch. Kids need space to express themselves, make mistakes, and figure things out. That’s how child
