Malmesbury Abbey, built c. 1120–70 and completed under Roger of Salisbury, opens with a remarkable sequence of Romanesque entrance arches. Each order carries its own set of carvings, from biblical narratives to patterned and foliate motifs, arranged to guide the viewer’s eye inward. Inside, the broad round-arched arcades sit on massive piers with cushion capitals, illustrating the structural logic of early Norman design, while later Early English work introduces pointed arches and greater height
