his beautiful site that Jake showed me is riddled with fossils from Ptychodus, a shell crushing genus that dominanted the oceans of the late Cretaceous period.Since their disappearance roughly 80 million years ago, nothing else has since evolved teeth quite like theirs. Truly unique. . . #paleontology #geology | Nomad Palaeontologists

Day 18: 24 days of Thinktank exhibits. This fossil tooth comes from Ptychodus latissimus, a large shark that lived in the warm, shallow seas covering much of Britain during the Late Cretaceous period, around 90 - 85 million years ago. Unlike the sharp, slicing teeth of modern predatory sharks, Ptychodus had broad, flattened teeth with ridged surfaces. These were perfectly adapted for crushing hard-shelled prey such as oysters, clams, and other shellfish that lived on the sea floor. Rows of these

We found a handful of Cretaceous sharks teeth in this sift, including a tooth from 'Ptychodus mortoni' the Shell-Crusher shark! This shark would've been eating ammonites and other invertebrates in these ancient seas over 66 million years ago. Ptychodus was a widespread genus during the Cretaceous period, but it did particularly well in the seaway that divided North America into two continents (Laramidia in the west and Appalachia in the east), called the “Western Interior Seaway”. Some species like P. mortoni were immensely successful, while others like the ultra rare P. rugosus didn’t fare as well. Last weekend, I found a long awaited goal, of another rare Ptychodus species- P. occidentalis #paleontology #fossils #adventure #fossil
