A major explosion and fire ripped through a residential neighborhood near Hayward, California after a construction crew struck an underground PG&E gas line on Lewelling Boulevard, triggering a violent blast that destroyed homes, shut down Interstate 238, and sent at least six people to the hospital. Firefighters say the crew hit the gas line around 7:35 AM, PG&E stopped the gas flow at 8:18 AM, and the explosion erupted shortly after 9:30 AM, sending smoke, debris, and flames high into the air.
