Meditation strengthens inhibitory control networks by training the brain to pause automatic reactions and shift attention with greater purpose. During meditation, a person repeatedly brings their focus back to breathing or a chosen point of attention. Each time the mind wanders and is brought back, the brain activates regions that regulate impulses, including the prefrontal cortex and the anterior cingulate cortex. These regions supervise decision making and help stop unwanted thoughts or action

Response inhibition aka impulse control. It means to stop, interrupt a response, delay an action, suppress a behavior, cancel an action, or restrain oneself. It is, you guessed it, an executive function skill. The prefrontal cortex in the frontal lobe inhibits impulses.
