One of the worst lifeboat accidents in our history, the capsizing of the oar-powered William and Emma on 27 October 1916 left only two survivors from a volunteer crew of 15. One of them, Eddie Distin went on to become the station's coxswain until his retirement in 1951. And his great grandson James is on the crew today. | RNLI
