During the Battle of Passchendaele, Captain Ronald Moorhouse was mortally wounded while advancing with his company on the first objective. A short time later, Lieutenant Colonel Harry Moorhouse was shot dead by a sniper, as he left his headquarters to try and find medical help for his son. Neither body was recovered. Today, both men are commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Flanders Fields. | Flanders Fields 14-18

Today in 1917, the British detonated 19 mines beneath the German lines in The Battle of Messines. The explosion underneath Hill 60 blew a 60 ft deep and 260 ft wide crater. Numbered hills like this one, got their names from the elevation above sea level. By the evening of the same day, New Zealand, Australian and British troops had successfully taken the Messines ridge-line. Today, Hill 60 is a memorial site, and nearby, Caterpillar Crater is also evidence of The Battle of Messines. 🎥- Hill 60

Polygon Wood is easy to overlook. It feels calm. Almost gentle. But during the First World War, this forest was a killing ground. Shellfire stripped the trees bare. Men fought for inches among roots and craters. Today, we walk where they once advanced. Not to relive battle. But to remember those who did not walk back. 📍 Guided private tours from Bruges 🌐 https://visitflandersfields.com #PolygonWood #WWIHistory #FlandersFields #VisitFlandersFields #BattlefieldRemembrance #YpresSalient #PrivateT

The events of the First World War left an enormous impact on the world, which is still felt today. It is estimated that 8.5 million soldiers from both sides were killed during the conflict with millions more injured. It is vitally important to continue the education of future generations about the importance of remembrance and peace. Today, on 20 September, the annual meeting of the World Heritage Committee, 139 cemeteries and memorials across the Western Front of World War I were confirmed as b

Flanders Field American Cemetery is the only World War I American military cemetery located in Belgium. The 6.2-acre cemetery in western Belgium holds the graves of 368 American dead from the Great War. Their headstones are aligned in four symmetrical areas around the white stone chapel that stands in the center of the cemetery. Inside are the engraved names of 43 service members missing in action. Graceful trees and shrubbery frame the burial area and screen it from passing traffic. At the ends
