Sikh Musical Instruments | SARANDA The Saranda is a unique instrument which originated among the Sikhs – designed, created and played by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Guru Sahib instructed his Sikhs to practise and share the singing of sacred Sabads with these instruments to elevate the soul and merge with the divine. The bowed instrument has similar-looking siblings known as sirinda, sarinda, qechak, gaychak, Nepali sarangi and many more. These are still played for regional folk music

The harmonium is the only instrument most Sikhs have ever experienced Sikh Kirtan through. It came into India via Portuguese missionaries as a more portable alternative to the church organ. The contribution the harmonium has made to Kirtan is huge. This is because it enables a Kirtani to learn to perform a Shabad within two weeks or so.
